As the Chicago Blackhawks take on the Utah Mammoth tonight, they have an opportunity to redeem themselves following a [lackluster 5-2 loss against Vegas](https://eatthehatchet-hockey.com/game-recap-chicago-blackhawks-vegas-golden-knights-sept-29-2026-stats-lineups/). There's one area that'll help them generate more offense: the forecheck

## Utah's 1-2-2

The Utah Mammoth could be an example for Chicago in how to employ a more aggressive version of the 1-2-2 in the offensive zone. Last season, Utah had their F1 aggressively pressure the puck-carrier and immediately reload once the puck shifted east-west. F2 replaced the F1 while the D2 pinched.

Below is a clip of the Mammoth's forecheck against the Colorado Avalanche in a preseason game on Sept. 20\. A few moments after the first forecheck example, Utah capitalized on a successful forecheck.

Chicago will have to be prepared to defend against Utah's 1-2-2\. In Tuesday night's game, they crumbled against the Golden Knights' forecheck, which led to botched retrievals and prolonged time in their end.

## Chicago's Forecheck

Chicago used both a 2-1-2 and a more passive 1-2-2 in the offensive zone. While the 2-1-2 saw some success (mostly from Ryan Greene's line), it also saw disastrous results as well:

In the above clip, Patrick Kane is playing as the F3 and has the responsibility of playing high in the zone. After the F1 and F2 collided and were effectively removed from the play, Kane decided to pressure, which created a 4-on-2 rush.

When Chicago employed a 1-2-2 forecheck in the offensive zone, the forward usually only pressured passing lanes by skating in front of the net. Chicago has fast skaters, and while some of their forwards are on the smaller side, Anton Frondell has shown to be physical on the forecheck in the past, and rookie Roman Kantserov led the Hawks in hits during his NHL debut with four.

The Blackhawks have the tools to play with more aggression; they just need to execute.
